Smart Cities

By the evolution of life some cities are adopting new ways to be a smart city that can meet all citizens’ needs and wants. Becoming a smart city is basically means a developed urban city that provides prosperous and sustainable life. (BusinessDictionary.com, 2015). The urban process in cities could take time and money, however, it will be a great step by the city for next generation.

Nowadays, the number of population is increasing in each city. The estimated number of this increase is around 150,000 people every day. A study shows that the number of the world’s population is estimated to increase to 72% between 2011 and 2050. (Orchestrating infrastructure for sustainable Smart Cities, n.d.). The diagram below show the world’s population in 2015 which is 7.324.782.000. (PopulationPyramid.net, 2015).

Cities must take an advance step to deal with this increase by concentrating on the six core system and link it to technology. These six core systems have different concept, network and structure and they are: people, business, transport, communication, water and energy. The first system is people it is include human needs, safety, health care and education. Next is business, a city’s business is the gate of income where it is important to focus on the economy. Next is transport it is include all aspect of transportation such as road, air and sea. Next is communication system this main system was available years ago however now it is provided with many ways and devices for example mobiles, wireless and broadband. Accessing and being able to communicate and analyse information and data is the key. Then water and energy a city cannot survive without these specific systems. (Driks and Keeling, 2009).

When a city is considering and welling to improve the six core system it will avoid many challenges that could face any developed city. Challenges will due to many limitations and problems for example:

To have a bright future as well as culture, cities must focus on environment, economic and social sustainability. This will be only achieved by improving the city’s efficiency. Smart city concept it is about developing and adopting new ideas, inputs and stakeholders from different sectors. (Driks and Keeling, 2009).

Nowadays many city governments in all around the world is trying to find out solutions to improve and develop their cities. City governments’ wants to adopt technology because they believe technology can play an important role to make citizens, business and visitor’s life’s much easier. IBM is considering smart city as one that generate an excellent interconnected information that helps for better understand and control. Since IBM worked with many cities and they understand that different cities have different budget and priorities. Therefore IBM determine the main wants. In addition IBM agreed that it is hard and impossible for a city to become a smart all at once, they have to focus on each issue and solve it. IBM programs are smarter water, smarter transportation, smarter public safety, smarter energy and many other programs. (Kehoe, 2011).
